FAQ
Every question, answered plainly
What Dual Recorder does, what it saves, what it costs and which iPhones it runs on. If yours is not here, ask us.
Recording
Can an iPhone really record with two cameras at the same time?
Yes, on the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every later model, using Apple’s multi-camera capture. Dual Recorder runs both cameras in one session and composes every frame pair live. See supported iPhones.
Which two cameras can I combine?
Me + View (front and back), or Two angles (wide and ultra-wide on the back). Single runs one camera at the phone’s full quality, and React puts a video from your library or a link beside you. The camera modes page explains what each is for.
What quality do two cameras record at?
They share one image pipeline, so on current iPhones two cameras record in the 1080p class at 30 frames per second, while one camera reaches 4K at 60. Settings shows the real size and rate of the live session on your phone.
Is sound recorded?
Yes, one microphone track shared by every file of the take. A meter under the microphone control shows it is working before you record, Settings picks the input, and the microphone can be muted so a silent take carries no audio track at all.
What happens if a phone call comes in?
The cameras keep recording. If the call takes the microphone, the take continues without sound and the app tells you so, instead of stopping.
Can I take a photo during a take?
Yes. A white shutter beside the record button stays live for the whole take and saves a still with the take’s own arrangement, without interrupting the video. See photo while recording.
Do the volume buttons work as a shutter?
Yes, on iOS 17.2 and later: a volume button starts and stops a take.
What happens when storage runs low?
The timecode capsule shows minutes left once the take has under fifteen minutes of room. A take refuses to start without a safe margin per video, and if storage runs out it ends cleanly, saved up to that point.
What is Director?
In a two-camera take with the window layout, Director watches who is talking: the camera whose person speaks fills the frame and the other sits in the window, and when both talk it shows a split. The cuts are written into the combined file live, and the clean files stay for a re-cut. Trying it is free; recording with it is part of PRO.
Can I pause a take?
Yes. Pause holds the take without ending it and resume carries on in the same file, so the video plays straight through.
What is a Duet?
In React mode, Duet puts the clip and you side by side. In the file the clip’s sound is ducked under your voice whenever you speak.
Files and layouts
What does a two-camera take save?
Your choice of Combined (one video with the window or split baked in), Separate (a clean full-frame video from each camera) or Both (all three). Every file starts on the same frame and shares one size. See what to save.
Do the clean videos line up?
Yes. All files of a take start on the same camera frame, share the same shape and size, and carry the same microphone track, so they align in any editor without syncing.
Which layouts are there?
A floating window you can drag, resize and reshape into a rectangle, circle, square or star; over / under and side by side splits; and a diagonal seam. All four can be changed mid-take. See layouts.
Can I change the layout after recording?
If the take saved its clean per-camera videos (Separate or Both), the editor’s Layout tool rebuilds the combined video in any arrangement. A Combined-only take cannot be rearranged.
Which video shapes can I record?
9:16, 16:9, 1:1 and the full 4:3 sensor, chosen before the take; a bright band on the preview shows what the file keeps. The editor can crop a different shape afterwards. See video shape.
Are recordings MP4 or MOV?
Takes are recorded as QuickTime movies written in short fragments, so a take interrupted by a crash or a dead battery still plays up to its last seconds. Exports from the editor are MP4 or MOV, whichever Settings says.
Editing and captions
What can the editor do?
Trim on a filmstrip, crop to any shape, rebuild a two-camera take’s layout, write captions, and export or share. A multi-video take shows a switch per camera and lets you export all files or some. See editor.
How do captions work?
On iOS 26, turn on CC in the top bar and the words appear on the picture as you speak; they are saved with the take as its transcript, and the editor can transcribe any take afterwards. Everything is written on the phone with Apple’s speech models. You correct any line, then export an SRT file or burn the words into the picture. See captions.
What does Clips do?
For a take of 20 seconds or more, Clips picks the best 20 to 40 second moments by sound, or by motion when nobody speaks, and saves each as a 9:16 clip or posts it.
Can I post straight to TikTok or Instagram?
Yes. Post exports the clip in the shape TikTok, Instagram Reels or Stories, YouTube Shorts or YouTube wants, saves it to Photos and opens the app on it. Free posts carry the small watermark; PRO posts do not.
Does the teleprompter appear in the video?
No. It is an overlay for the person filming. The video contains the cameras only. See teleprompter.
Price and privacy
Is Dual Recorder free?
Recording, layouts, Videos to save, the teleprompter, photos, the library and the editor are free, with no ads. Saving and sharing videos are free in HD with a small Dual Recorder watermark. PRO, a weekly or yearly subscription billed by Apple, exports full size with no watermark and adds Director recording, every platform, your mark, music, scripts and unlimited setups. See PRO.
Does anything leave my phone?
Your recordings, photos and captions are processed on your iPhone and leave it only when you save or share them. There is no account and there are no ads. The app does send anonymous crash reports, a handful of app events (such as finishing onboarding or saving a video) to Meta and TikTok to measure our ads, and purchase records through RevenueCat, with no advertising identifier and no tracking across apps. The privacy policy lists all of it.
Does it work on iPad?
No. Dual Recorder is built and sold as an iPhone app.
Where can I get it?
Dual Recorder is available now on the App Store for iPhone: download it here. The blog carries release notes.
